The famed “mansplaining” is one sort of gender competency questioning (GCQ), which refers to communication habits that cast doubt on a woman’s ability due to underlying gender stereotypes. While mansplaining, or condescending explanations, is by far the most talked about component, it is only one of three dimensions that make up the construct GCQ, the other two being voice non-recognition (manscluding) and intrusive interruptions. There needs to be a standardized scale for measuring all three dimensions of GCQ, suggesting a gap in academic research. This study aims to develop and validate an accurate scale for workplace GCQ cross-culturally (data will be collected in Brazil, the Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Greece, and Spain), explore GCQ’s work-related consequences for women, and examine differences and similarities of GCQ experiences and effects across cultures.
