Open your mAInd! Can tailored LLM feedback boost an actively-open minded thinking intervention against misinformation?

Misinformation poses a substantial threat to individual decision-making and broader societal outcomes. Effective countermeasures exist, but remain resource-intensive and dependent on expert involvement. A text-based intervention encouraging open-minded thinking offers a short, scalable alternative that has shown promising effects in reducing susceptibility to misinformation. Building on previous research, in our study, participants will evaluate a series of news headlines to test whether the effects of the intervention are further improved with tailored large language model feedback. We will focus on participants’ credibility and sharing discernment, as well as their overconfidence and open minded thinking at large. Data will be collected across five countries, allowing us to assess the generalizability of the intervention, and inform new effective and tailored interventions worldwide.
