The introduction of tools based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) immediately changed education. With fast, mostly unlimited access to agents that can write whole essays, many educators worry about academic integrity. This project investigates how students and faculty perceive the moral character and competence of cheating students, and whether these perceptions differ depending on the method of cheating – using AI versus another person’s work. We will conduct research across several European countries to identify cultural variations. If cheating with AI or another person is perceived differently by students and faculty, this can erode trust within the academic community and complicate the implementation of policies. Our study will provide insights to help universities navigate policy and norm-formation in this new technological era.
