Team Taavila at jSchool 2023

The rise of online media in recent years has been accompanied by a sharp uptick in the prevalence and spread of misinformation, such as fake news. Tackling misinformation is generally challenging. Mitigation efforts are further complicated by the fact that those most susceptible to misinformation also often exhibit unwarranted high confidence in their skills to recognize it. In this multi-country study, we test an intervention correcting these overconfident beliefs to see if performance feedback reduces susceptibility to misinformation. We investigate whether correcting overconfidence offers an added benefit over traditional misinformation interventions (such as literacy tips). The results of the study will support ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact and spread of misinformation.
