Undercurrents of Suicidality: Mapping Suicide-Related Internet Use across Europe

People experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors use the internet in widely varying ways. Suicide-related internet use (SRIU) can be protective (e.g., help-seeking, supportive communities) but also harmful (e.g., searching for method information). While SRIU among adolescents has received growing attention, it remains underresearched in suicidal adults, who account for the majority of suicide deaths.

In this cross-sectional, exploratory, cross-national study, we examine country-level factors (e.g., LLM usage, prevention strategies, GDP) and individual-level factors (e.g., digital literacy, coping skills, disclosure) in relation to SRIU among suicidal adults, using a survey administered across seven European countries.
Findings will inform preventive measures spanning search engine interventions, LLM safeguards, and national- and EU-level policy.
