Abstract
Schwartz theory of personal values is a seminal work in psychology, which posits ten values in a circumplex. Even though the value types from the theory have been quantitatively supported worldwide, limited research has explored the perceived meaning behind them. Within the Personal Construct Psychology framework, values can be treated as superordinate constructs while meaning can be investigated through subordinate ones. Therefore, we investigate a sample of emerging adults using mixed methodology. The qualitative technique ‘pyramiding’ is utilized to look into participants’ understanding of values, while the quantitative data is used to assess their importance. Our aim is to investigate perceived meaning behind values among emerging adults across cultures and to check if the circumplex still holds.
